Top Trump administration officials boast that a new partnership to expand immigrant detention in Indiana will be the next so-called “Alligator Alcatraz.”

State officials confirmed 1,200 empty beds at a rural prison dubbed “Indiana’s Speedway Slammer” are now available for the federal government to house detained immigrants.

The vice president will meet with Indiana Gov. Mike Braun to discuss redistricting the 1st and 7th congressional districts. The visit comes as Texas Democrats have taken refuge in the Chicago suburbs amid a similar effort in Texas.

The congressional redistricting fight — and Vice President JD Vance — are coming to Indiana. The big picture: Texas Republicans' plan to draw a new congressional map more favorable to the GOP before the 2026 midterms — at the urging of President Trump — has seemingly sparked a chain reaction with Democrats looking to retaliate with new partisan maps of their own.

The Miami Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison located at the former Grissom Air Force Base about 70 miles north of Indianapolis, can house up to 3,100 people. Annie Goeller, chief communications officer for IDOC, said part of the facility has not been filled because of a staffing shortage.
