Basic Instinct previously got a sequel, starring Sharon Stone, but sans Eszterhas, in 2006; the film flopped hard, bringing in something like one-tenth of what the 1992 original summoned up at the box office. Amazon MGM has apparently drawn a lesson from this, although god only knows if it’ll be the right one.

Basic Instinct (1992) writer Joe Eszterhas is returning to pen a not-yet-titled reboot of the Paul Verhoeven-helmed box office hit, which starred Michael Douglas as Detective Nick Curran and Sharon Stone as his case’s seductive prime suspect Catherine Tramell, a manipulative crime novelist.

Amazon MGM and producer Scott Stuber have obtained the rights to relaunch Basic Instinct, Entertainment Weekly has learned. Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who penned the original 1992 erotic thriller, is on board to write the project. Stuber, Nik Nesbit, and Craig Baumgarten will produce the film.
