Monsoon season has brought powerful storms to eastern India, with at least 33 people killed by lightning strikes this week alone.

Summer is a busy time for lighting strikes, which kill about 20 people and injure many others across the United States each year, officials said.

Another day of scattered thunderstorms is expected for the tri-state area Thursday, though the threat is diminished from a day ago, when an isolated cell turned deadly in New Jersey. Any storms that may develop are not expected to be as damaging as the ones that triggered flash flooding across the New York City metro earlier this week,

The odds of being struck by lightning is less than one in a million in a given year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. But people have died from lightning strikes in New Jersey before. In June 2024, a Manchester man was killed in Seaside Park.

The bolt struck local archers and a boy scout troop in New Jersey, killing one man and injuring 13 other people. Friends of the victims said the strike had come out of nowhere.

A series of lightning strikes near the home came as a line of severe thunderstorms rolled through the Kansas City metro overnight.
