Political newcomer Emile “Sid” Edwards has defeated Sharon Weston Broome in the Dec. 7 runoff election for East Baton Rouge Mayor-President.

Edwards, a Republican, defeated incumbent Democrat Sharon Weston Broome in the mayoral runoff on election night with 57,308, or 54%, of the votes. Voter turnout was low, just under 36% in the December election compared to 65% turnout in the Nov. 5 election.

There's not much time for the mayor-president-elect to celebrate Saturday's win, as Edwards now is looking ahead to filling his transition team to facilitate his move to City Hall.
