The second moon landing attempt by Texas-based Intuitive Machines has ended much like the first, with its Athena lander falling sideways into a crater and shutting down after 12 hours.

Last year, the Intuitive Machines' Odysseus lander was the first American spacecraft to land on the moon in 52 years and the first-ever commercial lunar landing. Unfortunately, the historic craft experienced a hard landing due to a faulty laser rangefinder,

The IM-2 lander is believed to have reached the moon's south pole region, but its precise position and location are unclear. Its intended landing area was Mons Mouton, an area believed to have water ice deposits.
