Heavy snowfall that began Saturday afternoon is expected to get worse Sunday morning, Environment Canada says, with snow continuing through the day.

New York and the US Northeast will pick up a few inches of snow overnight on Saturday from a winter storm that will also blanket the Midwest and southern Ontario.

A winter storm hit Ontario and Quebec for a second time in just four days, bringing warnings of dangerous travel conditions. Roughly 25 to 30 cm of snow fell in the Greater Toronto area while Montreal and Quebec City were expected to receive 30 to 50 cm and areas to the east of those cities were looking at as much as 70 cm.

Environment Canada has issued winter storm warnings for much of eastern Ontario and western Quebec. Emergency preparedness experts say to stay home if possible as Ottawa residents face a second severe snowfall this week.
