Years before he allegedly shot and killed two Israeli Embassy employees in Washington, Elias Rodriguez was an active member of left-wing groups in Chicago, protesting police violence and a proposed Amazon headquarters.

The Department of Justice is investigating the Washington, DC, shooting that killed two Israeli Embassy staffers as an act of terrorism and a hate crime, as details continue to emerge about the violent act,

Rodriguez’s charges were laid out in a criminal complaint. He was informed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh during an initial appearance in federal court Thursday that some of the charges against him carry the possibility of the death penalty or life in prison, officials said in the briefing later that afternoon.

Rabbi Brant Rosen of Tzedek Chicago said he did not know whether the shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum was antisemitic.

The suspect in an alleged targeted antisemitic deadly shooting in the nation's capital flew with his alleged murder weapon out of O'Hare airport Wednesday, court documents show.

"Because of what happened in Washington, D.C., every Jewish organization, every Jewish institution is revisiting their security plans, is reviewing their protocols," said Daniel Goldwin, chief public affairs officer of the Jewish United Fund.
