Just three days after winning the Qatar Open in Doha, third-seeded Andrey Rublev was ousted in first-round action at the Dubai Championships by qualifier Quentin Halys in three sets on Tuesday.

Compared to a few months ago, Andrey Rublev feels better emotionally and hopes to return to his best level soon. The Russian ace has put in some strong performances in the first two months of the new year, but has yet to find the consistency that allowed him to climb the ATP ranking during his best moment.

The home favorite held his nerve in clutch moments, edging out Rublev 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 to keep the Russian’s Major quarter-final drought intact. In 2023, Andrey dropped three more quarter-finals to Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.

Rublev has had an eventful week. He edged Alex De Minaur 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker, but it took him eight match points to do it. Then he edged Felix Auger Aliassime 7-5 in a third-set tiebreaker, in a match that finished with a whirlwind of fast-paced play and go-for-broke shots.

DOHA, Qatar — Andrey Rublev edged Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (5) to reach another Qatar Open final. The 10th-ranked Rublev needed four match points to close out No. 23 Auger-Aliassime for the sixth time in seven matchups.
