The debate over a Sheetz gas station in Farmington Hills continued Monday night, with the city rejecting the plan.

The roadblocks come in the midst of Sheetz’s plan to open 50-60 locations in Michigan over the next five to six years. The chain announced its plans to enter the Michigan market in December 2022. The company has just one Michigan location — a store at 33380 Wick Road in Romulus that opened in August.

Sheetz wanted to convert the site of a former restaurant into a gas station at 12 Mile and Middlebelt but faced firm opposition from residents.

Farmington Hills residents cheered early Tuesday morning as a proposal to build a Sheetz gas station at 12 Mile and Middlebelt was unanimously voted down by the city council.

Council members agreed with residents, who said the proposed 24-hour gas station, convenience store and restaurant was not a good fit for the 12 Mile and Middlebelt location.

Sheetz is proposing two locations in Farmington Hills, one at 12 Mile and Middlebelt roads and the other at Grand River Avenue and Middlebelt Road.

One of Michigan’s largest accounting firms is continuing to expand. Farmington Hills-based certified public accounting firm UHY LLP announced Monday it acquired the nearby Farmington Hills-based accounting firm of Tama, Budaj & Raab PC, effective Jan. 1, according to a news release.
