Indonesian officials say rescuers have recovered 16 bodies under tons of mud and rocks or that were swept away in flash floods that hit mountainside villages on Sumatra Island.

The Indonesian province of North Sumatra has been battered by a week of relentless rainfall leading to floods and landslides in several parts. Scores have died while rescue efforts are underway to search for the missing.

Rescuers recovered two more bodies from a tourist bus hit by a landslide triggered by torrential rains on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, bringing the death toll to nine, officials said. At least 20 people have died in other landslides and floods in the region this week.

Heavy rain battered North Sumatra last week, triggering severe floods and landslides. As of Thursday, November 28, at least 27 deaths have been reported, including a driver and passengers from a tourist bus,
