There was progress from Austin FC everywhere except the scoreboard on Saturday. But in the end, that’s the only thing that matters. The Verde & Black dominated possession, outshot Colorado 21-6 and had shots hit the post and crossbar during a 1-0 loss at Q2 Stadium as they failed to produce a goal for the second straight game.
Matthew McConaughey was spotted treating his good friends and possible brother Woody Harrelson to his first Austin FC match.
Austin FC’s 2025 season has officially gotten off to an inauspicious start. The Verde and Black dropped its third match of the season, 1-0, to the Colorado Rapids at Q2 Stadium to fall to 1W-0D-2L on the young season, having scored just a single goal to-date.
Aside from finding Navarro and letting him cook, the Rapids’ strength this season so far has been absorbing pressure and surviving on defense.
Joining midfielders Dani Pereira, Jáder Obrian, Myrto Uzuni and Owen Wolff in that hair game space that peaked in the early 2000s, Austin FC would be able to form its own boy band if it wanted to as it enters Saturday’s home game against Colorado.
Hollywood stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson cheered on Austin FC in the club's home game against the Colorado Rapids at Q2 Stadium. McConaughey, a co-owner of the club, brought his long-time friend and fellow actor Harrelson to experience the electric atmosphere of an MLS match in Austin on Saturday.
On paper, the new roster is built to win. ATXFC has the maximum three designated players, all in the heart of their primes between 26 and 29 years old. There’s veteran leadership in the form of Ilie Sánchez, Brad Stuver, and Julio Cascante, and even the club’s younger pieces are mostly highly experienced for their age.
First Half_1, Colorado, Navarro, 3 (Mihailovic), 18th minute. Second Half_None. Goalies_Colorado, Zack Steffen, Adam James Beaudry; Austin FC, Brad Stuver, Stefan Cleveland. Yellow Cards_Steffen, Colorado, 83rd; Mihailovic, Colorado, 89th; Obrian, Austin FC, 90th+1; Svatok, Austin FC, 90th+12.
After going two goals up through strikes from Keegan Rosenberry and Rafael Navarro, Colorado found themselves trailing by one after Pedrinho, Luciano Acosta and Petar Musa hit the target to turn the game on its head, but Navarro netted his second of the game in the 72nd minute to force a share of the spoils.
Austin FC is a work in progress. While that doesn’t make the club unique two games into the MLS season, after the Verde & Black’s 1-0 loss at Portland on Saturday, it seems like it’s going to be later rather than sooner when the Verde & Black are a polished product.
