Franz Schubert opens his big Piano Sonata in C Minor with a bang, and it turns out the music’s basically lifted from the opening of Beethoven’s 32 Variations in C Minor. Schubert adds a pedal point to give it more drama, and stretches it out to a fulfilling climax (rather than dashing expectations the way Beethoven does). Schubert did revere Beethoven, and you can hear in a general sense — but it’s fascinating to come across a clear example of influence like this. #piano #classicalmusic #musicap
